Tyler Balliet from The Second Glass teams up with Jeff Golden and Dan Parsons from Downtown Wine and Spirits to drink wine and argue about/ discuss the differences.

In this episode they tackle the:

2007 Charles Krug Sauvignon Blanc

Napa Valley, California ($17)

From the oldest winery in Napa Valley, California comes a fantastically fresh Sauvignon Blanc that hasn’t seen a lick of oak. Flavors of fresh peaches dance on your tongue as this wine begs the weather to get swelteringly hot. Drink on a stoop with friends but make sure to get a few bottles, because the first will be gone before you know it.

2008 3 Brooms Sauvignon Blanc

Marlborough, New Zealand ($15).

Damn, this wine is unique. If you think you’re getting your same ol’, run of the mill, New Zealand Sauvigon Blanc, think again. This guy has a crisp punch to it with a minerality that goes deep. While we hate to throw the word around all we can say about this guys is terroir. No need to spend $25 on a French Sancerre, because this guy will do all those Frenchies can do, plus more.

Staff writer and bartender Jessie Pray gives essential advice to longtime Second Glass fan, but website newcomer, Jarrett, on how to setup his apartment for a hot date.

Tricks to Mastering Dinner Date Wines:

Start with a half bottle of bubbly, preferably Champagne. This will be the most expensive thing you purchase all night, but starting off classy is key. We suggest a half bottle of the NV Perrier Jouët Grand Brut. This will run you about $30 but it’ll show you’re not afraid to spend a little dough.

When she shows up, make sure the table is set, wine glasses are out and the meal is almost finished cooking. Greet her and offer her a glass of the bubbly.

Tell her to sit down while you finish the last few minutes of preparations. This is when you pop your next bottle. Find something to pair with the food you’re cooking but keep it on the lighter side. Go with a smaller production “boutique” wine. This will save you some cash but also ensure it’s a quality bottle. If you’re not quite sure what to buy, visit a trusted wine store and tell them exactly what you’re making.

Red Wine: Unless you already know she loves California Cabs or Zinfandels, keep the red on the lighter side. A Pinot Noir, Washington State Merlot or Côtes du Rhône from France is a great option.

White Wine: If you’re cooking chicken, fish or other seafood, white is your go to. Try a German or Alsatian Riesling with chicken or heartier seafood. A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a great pairing with shellfish. French Vouvray goes perfectly with chicken. Otherwise a California or French Chardonnay pairs great with creamier dishes.

End with a bottle of dessert wine. While it’s not difficult to track down, not many people drink it on a regular basis, making it somewhat unique. Pair an Italian Brachetto, like the Rosa Regale, with chocolate. Also look for sweet German Rieslings such as Auslese, the famous French dessert wine Sauturne or Canadian Ice Wine.

Pile as much fruit as you can into your pitcher, full of ice. Your local convenience store should at least have oranges, lemons, and limes. If you have the money (or the proximity to a grocery store) pineapples, peaches, and strawberries make a delectable mix. Pour in your entire bottle of wine. Next, mix in throw in the Brandy, Triple Sec and Grand Marnier to “taste.” Splash in the grapefruit soda until you have the perfect blend (this is the part where you taste until you get it perfect!). Stir and Serve!
