I was on NECN this morning talking about wines that pair well with Thanksgiving. Here are the three wines along with a description, average retail price and a few stores in the Boston area that carry them.
NV Nino Franco ‘Rustico’ Prosecco di Valdobbiadene – $18
Veneto, Italy
Champagne ain’t cheap, so why shell out the big bucks if you don’t have to? Prosecco, on the other hand, is made and priced at everyday drinking levels, but often lack the extra flavor and pizazz that New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day or even wedding wines require. That’s where the Nino Franco comes in. Flavors of mineral, citrus, apples and pears come out of this sufficiently bubbly wine. Drink liberally with shrimp, sushi or directly out of the bottle, rockstar style.

2008 Dr. Loosen ‘Dr. L’ Riesling – $12
Germany
Bright, fruity flavors coupled with acidic sweetness make this wine perfect for warm days. This wine is an invigorating white with only a kiss of sweetness. Low alcohol content (8% vs. the typical 12% – 14% of most whites) makes this refreshing wine great for an afternoon of turkey eating. Produced in the Mosel Valley of Germany, this is a real-deal Riesling from a quality producer that won’t empty your wallet or get you wasted in the afternoon.

2007 Poppy Pinot Noir – $16
Monterey County, California
Good, inexpensive Pinot Noir is hard to find, so stock up on the Poppy. Great for everyday drinking, bring to parties or quaff over turkey. The bright fruit flavors + the lightness of the wine will make your entire family ask for another glass. And let’s face it, family is a lot more fun after drinking!
