Memorial Day Wines Seen on NECN

by Tyler BallietMay 22, 2009

Tyler was on the NECN Morning Show again, this time talking about great wines for summer BBQ’s. Watch the video then and below, see the list of wines with a listing of stores where they are available for purchase.

2007 Altovinum Evodia – $12

This is a 100% Garnacha from the mountain village of Atea in the Calatayud region of Northeast Spain. This wine doesn’t see any oak, which allows for the bold yet extremely bright fruit flavors to come out. We got juicy, red berries with a bit of spiciness and little to no tannin when we coiffed this Spanish temptress.

This is one of those wines that drinks like a champ, but for some reason, is priced way lower than it could be. From the expert hands of European Cellars comes a wine that has just started to invade the market. Look for it at your favorite wine bar soon.

2007 O’Reilly’s Pinot Noir – $18

This is one of the best wines for the money that we’ve seen. Typically, even $20 or $30 bottles of Pinot can be mediocre at best, but the O’Reilly’s delivers with an incredibly well balanced wine with solid but not overbearing fruit. The same winemakers as one of our favorite Northwest wineries, Owen Roe, make the O’Reilly. The grapes are farmed identically to their Single Vineyard wines, but set aside “simply because they do not fit into the style of Owen Roe.” This means you get to drink bottle after bottle of delicious, red-berry laden wine for 1/3 the price! That’s hard to beat.

2007 Kung Fu Girl Riesling

The summer beach lounging, patio sitting and backyard barbeque season starts now! It’s our goal to prepare you this for the plethora of invites for get-togethers that you’re about to receive over the next few months.

Yes, you could stop by a liquor store and grab a twelve-pack of beer or a bottle of wine with a tree, castle, horse or some other boring non-party-esque image on it, but what’s the fun in that?

What you really want is the 2007 Kung Fu Girl Riesling from Charles Smith Winery in Washington State. This dry and crisp Riesling with flavors of apricot and peach is smooth and refreshing regardless of whether you’re sipping aperitifs in your best seersucker suit or chugging it out of a red plastic Solo cup at a late night bonfire.

Why else? ‘Cause Riesling and girls kick ass!

Drink with grilled seafood, midnight Asian take out or all by itself with as many friends as possible.

Any chance that the segment will appear on youtube or the like?
The Evodia sounds very interesting, would love to try it.

The Evodia is good stuff – been thru about 4 bottles of it – was told it was the new version of Las Rocas due to producer/importer issues. $10 at Blanchards, discount in quantity too.
