Montepulciano, Italy – $16
When the pope decided to move his residence from Avignon, France back to Rome in 1377, a few noble families followed him. One of those families became known as Avignonesi. It’s unclear exactly when the family began making wine, but the vineyard is considered to be one the oldest in Italy.
It’s not often that history tastes this delicious. While the folks at Avignonesi make some epic high-end wines, we put this under $20 bottle in the “totally kickass” / “drink this everyday” category. Whether it’s a hot summer afternoon or a cool night, whether it’s with hamburgers off the grill or a nice sit-down Italian dinner, this wine will cover all the bases.
The 2007 Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano has incredibly bright, red fruit flavors that roll over your tongue and beg you to eat another bite. This dry wine becomes silky smooth after about 30 minutes of breathing but still retains all the freshness you expect from an everyday sipper.
Drink liberally with pork tenderloin, skirt steak or anything with tomato sauce.
