Rapel Valley, Chile – $12
Carmenere, once a regular blending grape in Bordeaux, has found it’s new home in Chile. Here it flourishes, making rich wines deep in color.
Okay, think of it this way; it’s like a Merlot, only earthier and bit jucier. It’s like what would happen if an uptight French teenager moved to South America to “chill out for a few years.” Underneath he would retain most of his old world charm, but he would grow his hair out, dress more casual and be less concerned with formalities. That’s basically what happened to Carmenere.
We included this wine because it’s a great wine to serve at holiday parties. It’ll go with most meats, cheeses and other appetizers that being passed around this time of year and it’s a hard wine to dislike. Plus, at this price, when your Uncle Ted pours half of a bottle into a plastic cup and starts chugging, your wallet won’t gasp in horror.

If you’re looking for a unique bottle, check out Cycles Gladiator Cabernet Sauvignon. Mind you, purchase it for the bottle only. You will be sadly disappointed with the wine, not even palatable if you’re already “well toasted”. While the smell is promising, deliciously warm scent reminiscent of warm, fresh made blackberry currant jam with a splash of vanilla, it initially hits the palate decently, but disappointingly based on the smell. Quickly this taste turns to one like Robitussin, the noxious green flavor, and this taste overpowers the smell and initial good taste with each subsequent sip. I challenge you to get past 3 sips.
I really enjoyed this wine! Maybe it isn’t for the snooty wine connoisseur, but I liked it. ;)
