Adelaida's wines begin at the roots, pushing through the rocky limestone soils on the west side of Paso Robles on California's Central Coast. The winery, which originated in 1981, is located 14 miles east of the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of 1,800 feet in the Santa Lucia mountain chain. The winery is a vineyard driven operation that considers itself a foremost proponent of the potential of west side Paso Robles. Adelaida's wild and rugged mountainside vineyards are loaded with limestone and calcareous shale. According to winemaker Terry Culton, "these characteristics cause the vines to strengthen. This results in added stress on the vines, which lowers the yields but produces more intensely flavored fruit". In keeping with the winery's sustainable philosophy, the vineyards are not tilled, encouraging native grasses, wild sage and rosemary to flourish between the rows. Adelaida produces from its own Estate vineyards and a select group of contracted vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. Amongst its holdings are the two principal estate properties, Viking Vineyard and HMR Vineyard. The mighty Viking Vineyard was planted in 1992 and is now producing great Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The historic HMR Vineyard was pioneered by Dr. Stanley Hoffman in the early 60s. Devoted care and substantial investment have returned these 40+ year old vineyards to their former glory. Intense, high quality wines are convincing first-time tasters and experts alike.
Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery is one of Paso Robles' most exciting and innovative wineries. Victor Hugo Roberts is the owner/ winemaker of the small family operated vineyard and winery. The family legend has it that he was named after a great uncle and a great grandfather (the man who Anglicized the family name from the French name Robert to Roberts), with no reference to any literary connection. Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery utilizes grapes from the estate (Templeton Hills Vineyard) as well as selected neighboring vineyards chosen for their commitment to quality. The estate vineyard is located in the Templeton Gap with warm days, breezy afternoons, and cool nighttime temperatures. Planted on the rugged, shale hillsides of the property the vineyard receives meticulous care including vertical shoot positioning, shoot thinning, cluster thinning, and leaf pulling. The vines are grafted on four different root stocks (phyllexora and nematode resistant) specifically selected for drought tolerance which allows the use of mild deficit irrigation to concentrate flavors and further improve quality. Production is limited to retain outstanding quality and detail in all aspects of the process. Victor Hugo is a small family owned and operated winery specializing in small hand crafted lots of wine with intense colors and flavors. The winery is dedicated to producing elegant, rich wines exhibiting excellent longevity.
The vision of three motivated people helped make Calcareous Vineyard a reality. Lloyd Messer sold his wine and beer distributing business in Sioux City, Iowa, to search for the ideal growing region for his vineyard sites. He recognized Paso Robles, California, as an emerging premium wine producing area. Daughter Dana Brown sold her Iowa wine distributing business to partner with Lloyd and shape the dream with her passion and classic style. We hope you will join us as we embark on an adventure into the wonderful world of wine. Calcareous Vineyard possesses all of the ingredients necessary to reach our goal of producing one of the highest quality wines in the state. We have the land, weather, sunshine, vines, and winemaker, creating the optimal conditions for the development of the best possible wines. Most importantly, it is our pleasure to offer you what the ancient Greeks called "the gift of the gods".
Harmony Cellars Winery offers award-winning artisan wines and picturesque views of the surrounding countryside. Owners Kim & Chuck Mulligan built their winery to reflect the serene and unpretentious beauty of Harmony. Established in 1989, Harmony Cellars now sits on land that has been in the family since 1910.
Halter Ranch Vineyard
Our vineyard is planted to many different grape varieties – both Bordeaux and Rhone-style, plus Zinfandel, Tannat and Tempranillo. The vines are planted on steep, south-facing slopes reaching 1800 feet in elevation and boasting soils rich in limestone, a feature of many of the world’s finest vineyards. High-density plantings, multiple clones and rootstocks, and low yields enable us to produce fruit of superb quality. We are committed to the environment. In 2008 Halter Ranch earned the SIP Certification, (Sustainability in Practice) in all our farming and winemaking operations.
Grey Wolf Vineyards
Grey Wolf Cellars winery and tasting room is located on Highway 46 West, 2.5 miles off of Highway 101 in beautiful Paso Robles, California. Family owned and operated, the winery facility and tasting room lie on approximately 12 acres of land overlooking rolling hills, pastures, and oak studded meadows, formerly known as Green Valley.
Make no bones about it, the challenge of developing wine grapes into the best tasting wine the Paso Robles region has to offer has been no easy task. Rob and Paula Campbell-Taylor, owners and caretakers of Graveyard Vineyards, bought the beautiful hilltop property in 2003 when the vineyard was in its seventh leaf and they set their goals firmly in place to create wines that memories are made of. Paula says, “I want to know that our wine is served at memorable occasions with families and friends and enjoyed with the comfort foods of that occasion. Comfort food and comfort wine—a match made in heaven!”
